HE HĀLANA I KAPALAI - Celebrating 10 Years of Restoration and Abundance at Kapalai Sept. 9, 2017
A program called Kūkuluhou is designed to promote the personal growth and development of youth ages 13-18 faced with challenging circumstances by strengthening cultural identity, self-esteem, life skills and their connection to their communities. This is accomplished by immersing participants in a kalo farm, where they receive instruction in traditional farming practices and values-based lessons focused on the core Hawaiian values of mālama ʻāina, aloha, laulima, and lokahi.
The loʻi at Kapalai offers the perfect outdoor hands-on learning environment for classes K-12 and college level to engage in āina and culture-based education. Students can make a connection to āina, learn important Hawaiian values, land stewardship, resource management, traditional agricultural practices, food production, and nutrition. Values-based lessons have been adapted for multiple grade levels, cover a wide range of subject areas and meet standards requirements in those subjects.
